As Dangerous gets closer and closer to hitting the shelves, that’s what I’m hearing. Oh, sure, I’m “just” a writer — not an “exciting” astronaut who’s about to be launched into outer space. But for me, the feeling is just as intense.
For the past seven years, I’ve been “orbiting” my dream — circling it, thinking about moving towards it, but never quite getting there. That’s because I let all of the doubts get in the way for far too long.
Eventually, though, I just HAD to let these characters out. First, they came flowing out of my mind. Then, they sat in my desk drawer while I agonised over how to tie all of their traits and sub-plots together. Finally, they got to come out of the desk drawer for good when I wrote those ever-satisfying words — “THE END”!
Little did I know that it wasn’t really the end, though. I still had a long journey of unreturned letters to publishers and agents to get through. The only thing that kept me going was reminding myself that at least I didn’t have Lizzie Taylor’s problems! (And once you read Dangerous, you’ll thank your lucky stars for that, too!)
So now, I’m onto the final countdown. Every meeting with my marketing team, my book cover designer, and my web designer is like another number ticking off.
As exciting as the official “launch” will be — when Dangerous is finally out in stores — nothing will be quite as exciting as seeing people reading it every day places, like out on the train or in a busy airplane terminal. Not too long ago, I was one of them, reading crime novels anytime I had the chance, dreaming of the day when I could create my own page-turner.
I’m living proof that dreams really do come true, so never let go of yours. With some hard work, your own “launch” could be right around the corner!
