I consider my current work situation to be like a mixed drink… Take three parts excitement, mix in one part fear, and serve it up with a twist. Even if you’re not a bartender, you probably understand exactly what I’m going through!
As I’ve been put the finishing touches to my second book, I’ve realised that some things are a little easier the second time around. For example, it will have only taken me about a year to get this book written, compared to what felt like forever writing Dangerous. Plus, I know a whole lot more about the entire writing and marketing process, which has made things easier.
However, that doesn’t mean finishing this book is EASY!
The success that Dangerous had has really forced me to kick things up a notch. There’s a much bigger audience waiting for my second book. That means the marketing efforts have to be even more intense. Overall, it feels like there is so much more riding on this book than there was on the first one!
(And, finishing this book means I’ve got to get in gear and start working on my THIRD book! Yes, that’s the “twist” I mentioned earlier!)
Even though I’ve been through all of this once before, the fear still creeps up and bites me from time to time. Sometimes, I wonder if all of the hard work will EVER be enough. And, I’m still not comfortable with seeing negative reviews. Oh, sure, I know they’re a part of being a writer, but I haven’t yet mastered not taking them personally!
Above all else, I want readers to enjoy this book. I want there to be a certain “wow” factor. I want the book to be everything the readers hoped it would be — and more. So, yes, I’m dealing with a healthy mixture of excitement and fear. But that’s life, right?!
