I’ve always dreamed of having the title “best-selling author” next to my name, which is why I’m so hard at work on my next book. However, there’s one title I’ve had for years that still teaches me something new every day — “Mum”!
I was lucky enough to spend the weekend with my children and grandchildren. To me, nothing beats being called “Mum” (or “Nan”, depending on who’s doing the calling!). But this past weekend, I got to take full advantage of the “Mum” title.
My daughter is about to turn 30, and she’s a little nervous. After all, to her, 30 is ancient! But instead of freaking out, she has decided to make a list of things she wants to do before she hits the big 3-0.
That’s when we got to talking…
Both of us started jotting down things that we want to do before we die. The first name for this list that sprang to mind was the “brown bread” list, brown bread being cockney rhyming slang for dead. Then between us we decided to call it the “Hovis list”. However, laughing about skydiving, flying planes, and going scuba diving taught me something important. It taught me that these things were just things. Going out and actually doing them represented something bigger — overcoming my fears and accomplishing my goals.
Whether you want to jump out of an airplane or visit a foreign country, now is the time to do it! There’s nothing more exciting than setting a goal and actually accomplishing it! The last thing you want is to look back on your life (when 30 DOESN’T seem so old!) and realise that you missed out, or that you have a list of “should have dones”.
As I added things to my list, I decided that now was the time to take action. OK, so you probably won’t see me jumping out of an airplane anytime soon! However, you’ll see me going full-speed ahead towards all of my other dreams and goals.
Try making your own Hovis list… You’ll be amazed at how empowering it is!
