Ever seen one of those old movies where the main character loads up his ratty old car and heads off to the big city in search of success? To make things more dramatic, he’s got a sign tacked to his bumper that says something like, “London… or bust!”
Well, I’m kind of like one of those old characters. Except in my case, it’s “Number one… or bust!”
As most of you know, I have a very specific goal. For years, I have dreamed of becoming a best-selling author. No matter what happens along the way, I’m not going to give up on my dream. Of course, achieving a goal — any goal — takes a lot of hard work.
And that’s where I am now.
I just finished an all-important meeting with my editor. We had a great lunch, and we spent lots of time discussing my second book, along with a few other future projects. Before the meeting, though, I was really nervous. (My fingernails were practically screaming for mercy because of all the chewing I was doing!). I had this nagging feeling that my second book just wasn’t “there” yet.
My editor agreed.
If you think I’m disheartened, though, think again. Yes, I’ll have to take a trip back to the drawing board, but it’s well worth it. After all, I want this book to be perfect — not just OK. I’ll do whatever it takes to get every single detail in tip-top shape.
There have been so many nagging doubts and fears along the way. Putting the finishing touches on this book has been like putting together a jigsaw puzzle — even more so than Dangerous because the expectations are so much higher. The “jigsaw puzzle” takes a lot of concentration and a lot of time to complete, but I enjoy it.
After all, you don’t get to be number one without putting in the work!
